What is the definition of a true empathetic person and what does it mean, the word empathy?

i have been describribed as a very empathetic person. What does that mean?What is the definition of a true empathetic person and what does it mean, the word empathy?
Empathy: is commonly defined as one's ability to recognize, perceive and feel directly the emotion of another.

Heinz Kohut said that ';empathy is the capacity to think and feel oneself into the inner life of another person.';

I like his definition for empathy.

If someone said that to you then you should continue to be empathetic. It is a value that everyone should treasure.

To walk in one's shoes and feel the worn experiences is important to better understand the people you love and those who cannot love.

Good for you! :DWhat is the definition of a true empathetic person and what does it mean, the word empathy?
It means you can feel the emotions of others as they would pertain to you in the same situation.
It means the capacity to put yourself in another's place, or shoes. It's different from sympathy, though related. Sympathy is often interpreted as pity, but it implies more the ability to ';come alongside'; - which is one degree removed from empathy, perhaps?
It means to truly understand what someone is going through and to give that person support based on your previous experiences.

Some people confuse empathy with sympathy. Sympathy is when you feel sorry for someone for something they are going through.
Empathy and sympathy are closely related words. A sympathic person is able to look at a situation and relate in an analytical way to that situation. Empathy is a deeper emotion. You can almost feel the pain that someone else feels. Empathic people tend to be more artistic by nature. When someone describes you as being empathic, they imply that you hurt when they hurt, you cry when they cry, you feel as they feel. Remember, empathy is a very deep and complex emotion. Take it as a compliment.
I too have been described as being empathetic. For me, I consider being empathetic as being able to put yourself in someone else's shoes for a moment and imagine what it must feel like to be going through whatever they are going through, and then to act in a compassionate manner accordingly.
It means you feel pain when someone else drops an anvil on their foot
