It's not the same as a criminal who just doesn't give a stuff about society. A rebel is someone who sees that things aren't good and will just go ahead and do the right thing whatever the outcome.
One who fights or sticks up for what he or she believes to be right, don't get mixed up with freedom fighters as they are usually in it for financial gain also, although not all.
Some one who is a true rebel questions why things are the way that they are. Some one who really has a strong moral compass and filters the world through it, and when seeing something wrong is compelled to respond to it.
