I'm not going to answer with any of that meaningless, contrived idealistic crap , excuse me, that says ';an American is everything and everyone, everywhere.'; Americans may pay that theory its due lip service in public but deep down they know better.

Requirement 1: Born Here.

This simply means, you're not considered a true American unless you were born here, or at most, raised here from an early age.

Requirement 2: Judeo-Christian European (or other Caucasian) background. That means, you're not considered a true American if you're a racial minority and/or hail from a non-Judeo-Christian background--like Hindu or something--you will sometimes feel like an outsider, that you don't belong, and will face prejudice/ignorance, like people asking you where you're from or telling you how good your English is. This doesn't mean everyone will hate you and you'll have no friends, but racism is alive and well here. Some among you will deny that it really exists, but this is how non-European immigrants and their children commonly perceive the situation. And I'd say they're right on target. It's essentially a white European-derived country, and that's how it is perceived, from both Americans' and (most especially) foreigners' point of view.

Btw, by ';Judeo-Christian'; I don't mean that you practice the religion, but that your ancestors hail from an area where it was predominant. I realize these guidelines are shockingly politically incorrect, unidealistic, unfair, and a bit cynical. But this is the bare-bones, non-sugar coated answer.
