What is the true definition of a God-Parent? (God Father & God Mother)?

Just wondering what the true definition of a God Parent is.

In my family growing up, I was told that it was a title given to someone so create a bond between that person and the child.

My husband, however says that God Parents are the people who are responsible for your child(ren) in case something should happen to the parents.

Are any of these true?

What is the true meaning of a God-Parent?

Thanks in advance! What is the true definition of a God-Parent? (God Father %26amp; God Mother)?
god parents are usually someone who is close to the expecting couple (best friend/brother/sister/close cousin etc) who can be trusted in care of the child in case something were to happen. the more modern version of godparents though develop a bond between the child and care for them as an aunt/uncle. so, technically you both are right. god parents were created to help care for the child, but more often than not they are deeply involved with the child's life anyways as a role model or protective figure. a god parent's role is a broad subject and differs in families.

i hope this helps! What is the true definition of a God-Parent? (God Father %26amp; God Mother)?
The most common meaning of god-parent is as your husband said..god-parents are given the rights of a child if something should happen to both parents and they were not longer able or alive to care for them, but it should be put in writing and signed (by a notary or lawyer).
Your husband is right, you chose your child's god parent by who you think would be able to best care for your child in case something should happen to you and your husband. Someone you can trust and you know will love them like you and your husband do
I thought that it was someone that your children knew and were comfortable around that were going to take care of your children if something may happen to the parents and they would not be able to take care of them.
