What is the true definition of ';liberalism';?

What is the real political philosophy of liberalism?

How has the original, classical definition of liberalism been morphed into the modern definition?

Which political party best describes the original definition of liberalism, and why?

And no, this is not a school assignment...lol..What is the true definition of ';liberalism';?
Classic Liberalism.

Individual freedom, free markets, limited government, human rationality, individual property rights, natural rights, the protection of civil liberties, equality under the law, constitutional limitation of government, and a gold standard to place fiscal constraints on government.

Social liberalism is far different and is what we call liberal today. Unlimited government, welfare state and state socialism. What is the true definition of ';liberalism';?
It still means valuing individual freedom, equal opportunity for all citizens and protection from exploitation. The 'L' word has been used as a cuss word so much since 1994 that very few really remember that.

The original Liberal philosophy was closer to the Libertarian party. The part that causes disagreement is the protection from exploitation piece -- Liberals did not support a true 'free market' approach because of the danger of exploitation by industry, when workers ability to choose better conditions, better pay and better products was limited by collusion and monopolies.
You have to understand that the definition of these terms depends on when (historically) they are used. Today's liberal is compassionate and believes that there is no problem that can't be solved by spending enough of someone else's money. Just look to California and how the voters recently reacted to that philosophy to see where that is going.
';classic liberalism'; = modern libertarianism. (individual rights, personal accountability, personal freedom. and extremely fiscal conservative)

';modern liberalism'; = modern socialism (socially liberal, fiscally liberal, higher taxes, increased size in government, etc)

ADD: Anytime.
Liberal means

Doing stupid ideas with no one wants so you can call yourself a liberal for trying new things only to realize the people who didn't like the idea has a good point but by then its too late and you know you are wrong and start to use the race card
Modern liberals are descendants of the Progressives...they are the complete opposite of the classical liberals that our Founders were.
It doesn't mean anything, anymore. It used to mean of or pertaining to the acquisition and engendering of civil liberties and human rights.
';The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened.';
A Liberal is someone who wants something for nothing and only wants to extend benefits and freedoms to other liberals.
Synonymous with č„´bamunism.
there are no liberals

just communists who call themselves liberal when theyre anything but

and conservatives
Apparently its the new word for ';SOCIALISM';.......
