drift, v. - 1) To slide a car around a curve or turn with the rear tires spinning and sliding, while maintaning some semblance of control. What is the true Definition of a Drift?
Basically, a drift is loss of traction on all tires because of sideways forces. It can be considered the same as a spin but without the polar movement, the car just slides sideways of the direction of travel.
I have no idea why drifts have achieved cult status. Under all conditions (except mindless showing off) they are a Bad Thing. Control is almost entirely lost, and the only good control that is retained is the ability to keep things from going worse. Drifting always results in reduction in cornering forces (it occurs in racing mainly as a result of pushing too hard and can result in the loss of an entire place in a single curve), effective loss of all braking and acceleration, and always loss of speed (energy is very literally scrubbed off and, as mentioned, the loss of traction means more can not be provided).
A drift means that your tires are skidding sideways as you round the curve.
